The Impact of the Three Gorges Dam: Differentiated Adaptations of Rural Households to Local Climate Change

Abstract:
Using the initial impoundment of the world’s largest hydroelectric dam in 2003—an event we confirm having induced persistent decrease of spring precipitation in the vast downstream area —as a natural experiment, we identify differentiated adaptations among rural households with different endowments. Using a panel of over 40,000 rural household (1989- 2014), we find a 14% reduction in yield of rice as a result of the climate shock. In response, households with limited access to market and finance adapt by increasing the cropping area to compensate the loss, while the resourceful households choose to migrate out for more non-farm opportunities.
