Incentive Design on MOOC

Venue: Room 1300
Abstract:
Massive open online courses (MOOCs) innovate education by providing users around the world the access to high-quality education resources in an interactive environment. It remains a challenge, however, to maintain users' learning enthusiasm and mitigate engagement decay. We conduct a field experiment in which users are given monetary incentives to engage in online learning. We find that treated learners are more likely to submit homework and get higher grades. The effect is especially strong for those who were more active ex ante, and persists even after we remove the monetary incentives. Overall, our findings suggest that monetary incentives counteract the decay of learning engagement and may help users form learning habits.
